KOLKATA/MUMBAI: Indian banks have managed to perform reasonably well in the fourth quarter despite worries about rising bad loans and shortage of liquidity.

Key equity index, the BSE Sensex, today staged a dramatic comeback after the country's largest bank, State Bank of India (SBI), announced a jump of nearly 200 times in fourth-quarter net profit.

The BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty showed a nice rebound in late trade on Friday led by outstanding performance by SBI in fourth quarter numbers and sharp recovery in rupee from record low to near previous close.

That bank stocks are on a comeback path is clear. What is not so clear is which of the two - public sector banks (PSBs), or private sector banks - will give better returns.
